How to Recognize Anxiety

Do you know that anxiety is the most common mental problem of Americans, affecting 18.1% of the population? That means that 40 million people in the US are reported to have anxiety every year. Although anxiety is not a rare condition, it is not easily recognizable and it may take several visits to the doctor before a patient gets the proper diagnosis that he or she has anxiety.

You may ask: why is it important to recognize anxiety? The reason is because the failure to recognize the existence of an anxiety disorder is one of the major obstacles in the treatment of a patient. A patient wrongly diagnosed of a condition when in fact is suffering from anxiety may be prescribed with medications that can only worsen his or her anxiety disorder.

When you suffer an attack, to wonder what kind of attack hit you makes the situation a whole lot worse because an anxiety attack can be taken to a heart attack or a heart burn attack or some other condition like asthma. However, just because you have difficulty in breathing and your heart pounds a million times per minute does not necessarily mean that you have a heart problem. It is a fact that there are thousands of patients who are brought to the hospital every year for emergency care because of a suspected heart attack. Sometimes, the findings usually show that the patient's vital signs are normal. In most cases, the attack could possibly be an anxiety attack. That is why, it is important for you to learn how to recognize anxiety so that you can take the proper course of action and seek appropriate medical treatment from the right specialized doctor.

Recognition of the problem is the primordial goal of every patient because it is only through such recognition that it can be treated. The key for you to recognize whether or not you have anxiety is - to be informed - to know the symptoms of anxiety. There are two matters that you should watch out for: physical symptoms and emotional symptoms.

• Physical symptoms. The most commonly reported symptoms of anxiety are difficulty in breathing and rapid heartbeat. When you have difficulty in breathing, you can feel that your breath becomes shorter and irregular and speaking becomes a whole lot more difficult. Another usual sign is rapid heartbeat when you heart beats so fast that you can feel its pounding even without feeling your chest with your hand. Other usual reported symptoms are: sweating, lightheadedness, headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, frequent urination, muscle ache, insomnia and shaking among others.

• Emotional symptoms. Along with anxiety come emotional changes among which are: constant fear, nervousness, worry, irritability, confusion, restlessness and disconcertment. There are also some who feel that they are dying or feel that they are losing control of their selves.

If you have a combination of a number of the above symptoms, you might likely have anxiety. Anxiety is a normal reaction of the body to stress but when it is constantly recurring and takes over your life, it is already a different situation. This is more especially true when you already experience anxiety attacks, which can be easily recognized from a heart attack since it usually only lasts for more or less 10 minutes and the your vital signs remain normal. If you feel that your anxiety is beyond normal that you have difficulty in coping with it, medical attention is most appropriate. Do not be scared to ask for help because anxiety is treatable and neither should you feel ashamed because it is a common disorder.
